Ume Group 1 (Invention: BACKPACK TURNING ROTATOR)

• Benefits

Problem: We have to carry heavy backpacks at school with many stairs.

Heavy backpacks are a real problem. So, with our Backpack Turning Rotator, with less pain, with more energy, we can go to school with light bodies. It is really fun to see our backpacks going through a tube and it also turns into a ‘Resting Escalator’. When we walk up and down the stairs, it is very tiring. But this escalator is good because we can sit in a chair and talk with our friends. Also, it can put a good scent on the chair and we can study for the test while going to our classroom for the last few minutes. It will help everyone: friends, teachers, and anyone that needs help with backpacks.

• Manual

Our invention is the Backpack Turning Rotator (BTR). We can put our backpacks in the tube. There are four tubes on every floor, so we don’t need to carry our backpacks upstairs. Inside there is an escalator instead of stairs. So we can sit on it and rest, and the escalator goes at a speed of 40 km/h. It is 4 times the normal speed. But, there is a rule: If people ride the BTR more than 1200 times, the machine will explode. The tubes are transparent so that in the elevator, we can see our backpacks moving safely. The tube’s speed is 20 km/h.

Ume Group 2 (Invention: THE NOMO CREAM)

• Benefits

Problem: Mosquito bites

• There will be no mosquito bites.
• Nobody would need to go to a hospital because of mosquitos.
• Those who have mosquito allergies would not get hurt.
• Mosquitos will not come near you.
• Nobody will feel bad because of mosquitos.
• Nobody would wake up when they are sleeping because of the noisy mosquitos.
• People will be happier!

1. Open the cap.
2. Spread the cream on your arms, legs, and body.
3. After you come home, wash your arms, legs, and body with soap.

Ume Group 3 (Invention: LIFE SAVER)

• Benefits

Problem: My grandparents choke on their food!
It is very dangerous for our grandparents when they eat and choke when they are alone and there is no one to help them. Our invention ‘Life Saver’ is a good invention for a number of reasons:

1. We can do it by ourselves and it is easy to use without help.
2. We can save people immediately instead of waiting for the ambulance.
3. The invention is simple to use.
4. It can do the Heimlich Maneuver without assistance.
5. We don’t need a lot of money, ‘Life Saver’ is very affordable.
6. We don’t have to use electricity so we don’t have to use power which makes it environmentally friendly.

• Manual

‘Life Saver’ is made for senior citizens, but other people can use it too! It is made of rope, rubber, and a bicycle brake. It is for senior citizens. There is a drawer on a table for the invention. If you choke, you wear this invention. You push the bicycle brake, then you can force the food out of your throat and save your own life!

Ume Group 4 (Invention: SUPER COOL HAT)

• Benefits

Problem: I want to play outside, but it is too hot.

The invention we made allows us to play outside for longer by keeping us very cool during the hot summer season. When we are very hot, we get clammy, sweaty, and uncomfortable. However, those things will disappear with our ‘Super Cool Hat’. Our invention has many benefits. One of them is a mosquito patch that repels the terrible mosquitos. Also, the hat comes with a beautiful handkerchief to wipe your sweat away. Our invention has a removable cap that you can use as needed. The ‘Super Cool Hat’ will keep you cool and hydrated and allows you to drink water from a straw built into the hat.

• Manual

This is a hat that has a rubber band to hold it onto your head. There is water inside the rubber band and we can drink it with a straw connected to the band. The hat is made of a light material. There is a sticker that can repel mosquitos away and a clean handkerchief to wipe away your sweat. You need to be careful not to break the things included in our ‘Super Cool Hat’.

Rose Group 1 (Inventor: Antonio Meucci)

• Background: Antonio Meucci was an Italian inventor. He was born on the 13th of April, 1808, as the first of nine children to Amatis Meucci and Domenica Pepi. He died on the 18th of October 1889. He lived in Via dei Serragli 44 in San Fiediano. In November of 1821, at the age of 13, he was admitted to Florence Academy of Fine Arts as its youngest student where he studied chemical and mechanical engineering. Because of this, he was able to create the electromagnetic telephone. Around 1858, artist Nestor Corradi sketched Meucci’s communication concept.

• Inspirations:  Antonio Meucci designed an acoustic pipe telephone to allow communication between the stage and the control room at the Teatro Della Fergola. This type of telephone was based on the pipe telephones utilized on ships. This work inspired Antonio Meucci to make an electromagnetic telephone.

• Invention: Meucci studied the principles of electromagnetic voice transmission for many years and was able to transmit his voice through wires in 1856. He installed a telephone-like device in his house in order to communicate with his wife.
• Quote: “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you.” The famous first words spoken on the telephone, a device conceived by Antonio Meucci and stolen by Alexander Graham Bell.

Rose Group 2 (Inventor: Garrett Morgan)

• Background: Garrett Morgan was born on March 4th, 1877, in Paris, Kentucky. He was an African American inventor. In his childhood, he only graduated elementary school. So, he tried to learn and follow his fellow people. He also had many family members. He was the seventh of eleven children. He received a sixth grade education at Broch Elementary School then moved to Ohio to do research. He married and was divorced. They also had three children. His father’s name was Sydney and his mother’s name was Elizabeth. Garrett Morgan’s mother was part Native American. He invented many important inventions and died on July 27th, 1693.

• Inspirations: After witnessing a collision between an automobile and a horse drawn carriage, he thought that something must be done to prevent traffic accidents. It was his first inspiration. Also, he invented the smoke hood to be safe from smoke and ammonia. He invented the protection device after seeing firefighters struggling to withstand the smoke. He thought that they needed a way to protect firefighters from smoke.

• Invention:

Traffic light- Manually operated traffic signals with moving arms featuring “stop” and “go” signs, which could be situated on a post at traffic intersections.

Smoke Hood- Used a moist sponge to filter out smoke and cool the air. It took advantage of the way smoke and fumes tend to rise to higher positions.

Rose Group 3 (Inventor: Whitecomb Judsonn)

• Background: Judson was born March 7, 1843, in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the Union Army and enlisted in 1861 at Oneida, Illinois, in the 42nd Illinois Infantry Regiment according to the Illinois State Archives. Judson attended Knox college in his hometown in Galesburg, Illinois. He was found in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1886. In 1886 and 1887 the Minneapolis city directory identified Judson as a “traveling agent”,  a traveling salesman working probably for Pitts Agricultural works. A couple of years later Judson began working for Earle Manufacturing Company with Harry L. Earle as the head of the firm.

• Inspirations: When he invented the zipper in 1893, it was the century when we only used buttons and ties. So it was very uncomfortable to tie shoe laces every morning when you’re late for work. So, he thought of the way more comfortable, zipper. It was comfortable because we can lock the pocket of clothes easily only by sliding the holder.

• Invention: Have you ever heard of zippers? Zippers are much easier to use than buttons. Sometimes you miss a button and need to do it all again. But, zippers we can only slide the holder up and down.

Rose Group 4 (Inventor: Nancy Johnson)

• Background: Nancy Johnson was an American innovator. She was born on December 18th, 1794, and died on April 22, 1890. She had one sister named Mary. She married Welter Rogers Johnson in Medfield, Massachusetts in 1823. She had two children named Walter W. John and Mary Maria Stround. She moved to Philadelphia in 1843 when she filed for her patent for the first hand-cranked ice cream churn. The patent number for the Artificial Freezer is US3254A. It was patented on September 9th, 1843, and antedated on July 29th, 1848. Johnson received $1,500 during the course of her life for her patent.

• Inspirations: At that time, only the rich could eat ice cream and only a few people could afford to enjoy it. It is because it was hard to make and it also took a lot of time to make, but with this ice cream maker people can make ice cream faster and easier than by hand.

• A Lesson for Us: Our team believes that Nancy was very brave to choose to be an inventor. Long, long ago, women couldn’t do anything. However, she had a brave tryout. We can learn that Nancy Johnson was courageous and that is a lesson for us.

Orchid Group 1 (Inventor: Garret Morgan)

• Background: Garret Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky. Morgan was the Seventh of 11 children of former slaves, Syndey Morgan and Elizabeth Reed, who were liberated in 1863. He left home at the age of 14 with only elementary education and eventually settled in Cleveland, Ohio. He learned to repair sewing machines by himself and worked with many companies, before opening his own professional sewing machine business in 1907. The business was successful and allowed Morgan to build a house in Cleveland, and in 1908, he married Mary Ann Hasset and had three sons. In 1943, he got glaucoma, lost most of his eyesight, and died 20 years later.

• Inspirations:

Traffic Signal: In 1922, he witnessed an accident between a horse-drawn carriage and a car, which sparked the inspiration to prevent similar future events from occurring. Morgan designed a manually-operated traffic signal with moving arms featuring “stop” and “go” signals at traffic intersections.

Smoke hood: He got inspiration after seeing firefighters struggling to withstand the suffocating smoke they encountered.

• Invention:

The smoke hood was a very useful invention. It helped us breathe around poisonous gas!

The traffic sign is the most-used traffic machine. It makes us safe by turning color, green or red. Green means go and red means stop.

Orchid Group 2 (Inventor: Willis Carrier)

• Background: Willis Haviland Carrier (November 26, 1876-October 7, 1950) was born In Angola, New York, the son of Duane Williams Carrier and Elizabeth Haviland and was their only child. As a young boy, he attended a one-room schoolhouse and never missed an opportunity to play baseball or take a dip in Lake Erie with his friends. He was an engineer. People called him the master of engineering. His wife was Jenny Martin and in 1915, Camer and his 6 friends earned $32,600 and made the Carrier Engineering Company and this company became the modern Carrier.

• Inspirations: For Willis Carrier, it was a foggy Pittsburgh train platform in 1902. Carrier stared through the mist and realized that he could dry air by passing it through the water to create fog. It became possible to manufacture air with different amounts of moisture in it.

• Invention: Carrier invented the first electrical air conditioning unit in 1902. In 1915, he founded Carrier Corporation, a company specializing in the manufacture and distribution of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

• A Lesson for Us: We learned that if we want to succeed, we need to work hard and never give up. Also, we should try to be a person like Willis Haviland Carrier.

Orchid Group 3 (Inventor: Dean Kamen)

• Background: Have you ever heard of Dean Kamen? Well, you might not have! It is because he is an innovator. However, we are going to make him more famous by this. Now, let’s hear about his background. He was born on April 5th, 1951, in Rockville. His parents were named Jack and Evelyn Kamen. He also had brothers named Barton Kamen, Mitch Kamen, and Terry Kamen. When he was young he had a learning disability. He was a slow reader and thinker. He also behaved badly in school, but he has since become an inventor and innovator.

• Inspirations: He started inventing the iBot because other disabled people were having a hard time walking. It was a groundbreaking product that could run using two wheels and go up stairs and down stairs. He started inventing at the age of five. Most famous of his inventions is the Segway, but it is just one of his hundreds of inventions.

• Invention: The iBot is a robot wheelchair. It helps amputees climb stairs. It can climb stairs using the rear wheels, but it requires education on its natural posture and how to use it, and it cannot be used on all stairs due to standard issues.

Orchid Group 4 (Inventor: Patricia Bath)

• Background: Patricia Bath was a famous doctor and inventor. She was born on November 4, 1942, in Harlem, New York. Her Parents loved and supported her, and they always told her to study hard. Patricia loved reading books, traveling, and learning about science. Patricia Bath was not only a great inventor but also a person who cared about helping others. She worked hard to make sure everyone, especially poor people, could get eye care. Her mom bought her first chemistry set when she reached high school In 1988. Patricia Bath became the first Black woman doctor to get a medical patent for her Laser Phaco Probe.

• Inspirations: Inspired by the French Nobel Peace Prize laureate Albert Schweitzer’s work in medicine, she studied connections between cancer, nutrition, and stress. Her school recognized her work and published it. She learned about lasers from a pioneer researcher, Daniele Aron-Rosa.

• Invention: This tool uses a laser to fix a problem in People’s eyes called cataracts. Cataracts can make people’s eyes cloudy and can even cause blindness if not treated. Patricia’s invention helped doctors treat cataracts in a safer and faster way.

• Benefits

Problem: Heavy backpacks at school

Our invention helps us to go up the stairs with a heavy backpack. It helps you grow up. Because carrying heavy backpacks makes your cells tired, so your height will not increase. Also, your shoulders won’t be sore anymore! Finally, you don’t have to be tired and frustrated because we have the amazing and wonderful invention ‘Bagscalator’!

• Manual

First, we have to put the bag in the basket of the floor number that you want to go to. Next, select the floor that you want to send your bag to. Lastly, push the red button on the left. Your bag will go to the exact place. We are going to buy baskets, make the metal hook that the basket hangs from that is strong, and a red button that will send a signal to the machine that takes the basket. You can receive your bag on that floor. The basket will go back to the first floor. When you go home, you can also call the basket. The ‘Bagscalator’ also goes down. You can use ‘Bagscalator’ that goes up when you are going to your class, and you can use ‘Bagscalator’ that goes down when you are going home.

Peony Group 2 (Invention: WHALLY)

• Problem: Global warming

Our group invention has many benefits. Firstly, it will give animals a cooler environment. For example, humans use an air-conditioner for a cooler environment, now we will copy this method to make the environment in the North and South Pole cooler for animals.

Secondly, it will help humans as we are suffocating because of the hot weather in summer. For example, global warming happens because of trash and emissions from humans that makes the environment hotter. Our invention can make useful products by recycling the trash and reducing emissions.

• Manual

Our group’s invention is whale-shaped. The first step is to push the On/Off button on the whale’s belly. If you want to use the recycling mode, you need to put trash such as can, plastic, and metal in the whale’s back and wait ten minutes. Soon the trash will break down and form into resources that we can use again. These come out from the whale’s tail. When you want to use the dehumidifier mode, it releases cold air from the whale’s mouth when you push the On/Off button. This is helpful for both humans and animals by preventing harm to Earth because of global warming.

Peony Group 3 (Invention: THE SUPER UNDERGROUND DRIVEWAY)

• Benefits

Problem: Traffic congestion

If you use ‘The Super Underground Driveway’, a spring will blast your car forward which makes your car very fast. This can be helpful when you are late or when you want to arrive early. Being late can cause many problems and stress. Also, you can use less fuel which can save you money and decrease air pollution. You can drive your car conveniently at night because there are many lights that make it bright. This invention can also help you in the summer and winter. It is because the underground driveway will be warm in winter and cool in summer.

How to use :

When you are stuck in traffic, drive into the underground driveway. When you pull the wood board outside the spring box, the spring bounces off, pushing the car forward to go faster.

How this invention works :

The car moves forward when the spring bounces. The spring pushes your car. This underground driveway will be on every road.

• Benefits

Problem: Being tired and stressed

Dopamine turns your stress into happiness. If the dopamine doesn’t really work, we can use a placebo effect. Dopamine is a medicine that makes you happy! Is your life stressful? Are you okay? If your answer is “No”, buy Dopacine to reduce your stress. When you reduce your stress, you can be happy and improve your physical and mental health. Our medicine will change lives because it will develop our corporation which will benefit the local economy and people. It is a naturally-occuring substance, so some side effects can happen, such as addiction. However, you can be happy!

When you take Dopacin, drink it with half a cup of water. If you want the effects to last for a long time, drink it 3 times a day. It is only safe when you drink it 2 to 3 times a week. In one bottle, there are 4 pills. One bottle costs 5,000 Won.
