UME

Team A: Lava in the Jar

Group Members: Lee, EunWoo(Alex) / Hwang, HyeonSeong(Sky) / Lee, MunHo(Jaden) / Lee, SeoHa(Seoha) / Kim, SunJu(Emma) / Jeon, SeoYool(Sarah)

Materials: one jar, food coloring, water, cooking oil, one fizzy tablet

Hypothesis: The food coloring will change the color of the water & color and the oil will make bubbles. At last it will be a lava lamp.

Method: First, we got a jar and put oil and water in it. Next, we added food coloring to the mix. Lastly, we were curious, so we shook the jar and investigated how it worked.

Conclusion: However, the fizzy tablet made the bubbles. Our hypothesis was right because it had bubbles. But I think next time we will need more oil.

Team B: Lava Lamp

Group Members: Choi, JiYu(April) / Chun, SeJun(Eli) / Kim, ChaeYul(Emily) / Jo, SeoYoon(Seoyoon) / Koh, ARim(Arim) / Ryu, JeongWoo(Aiden)

Materials: one jar, food coloring, cooking oil, one fizzy table

Hypothesis: We think the mixture will explode like a volcano.

Method: We put oil and water into a jar. Then we put in food coloring. We waited for a second. Then we put in one fizzy tablet. The water floated up and looked like a real lava lamp.

Conclusion: We were incorrect. It didn’t explode. But the oil floated on the water.

Team C: Lava Lamp

Group Members: Lee, SeoJun(Ayann) / Cho, SeongHu(Thomas) / Choi, SeungWoo(Kai) / Kim, MinChan(Mason) / Kim, RoA(Roa) / Rutherford, Isla(Isla)

Materials: one jar, some food coloring, cooking oil, one fizzy tablet

Hypothesis: We think the bubbles will rise up to the top of the liquids.

Method: First, we put oil and water into a jar. Then, we need to put in a few drops of coloring. Lastly, we dropped in a fizzy tablet.

Conclusion: The oil came up to the top and the water went down. Our hypothesis was mostly correct.

Team D: Lava Lamp

Group Members: Song, YunHa(Lina) / Lee, JuYoon(Kaylee) / Lee, SeOn(Sean) / Kim, YuNa(Leah) / Lee, SeokHyun(Kai) /  Chang, SiWoo(Aiden)

Materials: oil, water, food coloring, jar, fizzy tablet

Hypothesis: The food color will change the color of the water when we put it in the jar.

Method: We started our project by putting some water and oil inside a jar. Then we poured in some food coloring. Last we put in a fizzy tablet. We watched the scientific effects happening.

Conclusion: It was correct because the fizzy tablet changed its color. Also the oil floats on top of the water because oil has less density.

ROSE

Team A: A Cool Combination

Group Members: Kim, HyoChan(Joshua) Yang, Jiwan(Jimmy) Lim, JungHoo(Ryan) / Ha, YiJun(Yijun) Kwon, JiAn(Emma) Ha, SLan(Slan)

Materials: one bowl, some starch, some water

Hypothesis: We think it will change into something like dough.

Method: The first step was adding water to the starch. The second step was mixing everything together. The combination of the two materials created a type of matter called ‘Oobleck’. This matter turned into a solid when forces were strong. When the forces decreased the Oobleck turned into a liquid.

Conclusion: The matter experiment ended with the starch and water mixing together to form an ‘Oobleck.’ The Oobleck became a solid when squeezed and liquid when we let go. Our hypothesis was half right and half wrong.

Team B: Oobleck

Group Members:Park, JiHo(Joseph) Park, SeoEun(Sienna) Kang, MinSeok(Jake) / Park, SiYoung(Megan) Park, YoonJin(Jinny) Park, JuHwan(Juhwan)

Materials: one bowl, some starch, some water

Hypothesis: It will feel like cookie dough. It will feel like a liquid.

Method: We put starch into a bowl and then poured in some water. We mixed both together. Then it was not the same as it was before.

Conclusion: We were half right, but half wrong because it felt like a liquid, but also a solid. It is like a solid when there is pressure, and when there is not it is like a liquid.

Team C: How to Make Oobleck?

Group Members: Lee, JoonSeo(June) Hyeon, ChaeYoon(Rachel) Park, JunSung(William) / Park, JiYul(Ruby) Ko, DaHyun(Dayen) Kim, VanDy(Vandy)

Materials: one bowl, some starch, some water

Hypothesis: We think the mixture will become like dough. Also, we think it will become very sticky.

Method: We mix the starch and water in a bowl and it became Oobleck. Oobleck is solid when we run quickly on the Oobleck, but when we run gently on the Oobleck, it is liquid.

Conclusion: We had two hypothesis. It will become very sticky. It was right, and it will become like a dough. It was wrong so we were half right and half wrong.

Team D: Starch + Water

Group Members: Cheon, EunJoo(Eunjoo) Eom, TaeHee(Sophie) Cho, HyeonHo(Leo) / Choi, PilRim(Jayden) Kim, DongJun(Jason) Jeon, EIn(Sophia)

Materials: one bowl, some starch, some water

Hypothesis: We predict mixing starch and water will make something like a dough. For example, if we push it with a light force, it will stick on our hand but if we push it with a hard force, it will be more solid like dough.

Method:

1. Mix starch and water in the bowl

2. Mix the starch and water

3. Wash your hands with a soap because it smells like corn

Conclusion: Our team was perfectly right. We wrote ‘It will be something like dough.’ And it was perfect. It is called Oobeck, when we press it, it became solid, and when we put in our hand softly, it became a liquid. So Oobleck is liquid and solid!

ORCHID

Team A: The Three Layers

Group Members: Choe, InAh(Inah) Bae, JiAhn(Jiahn) Kim, AYoon(Paul) / Min, DooYoung(Michael) Jo, JaeHee(Jaehee) Jung, YunHoo(Samuel)

Materials: one jar, some colored water, some cooking oil, some maple syrup

Hypothesis: First, we think it will explode. The color will change and it will smoke. We think the three liquids will stay apart inside the jar.

Method:            1. We poured some colored water inside the jar.

                           2. Then we poured some maple syrup inside the jar with the water.

                           3. Finally, we poured some cooking oil into the mixture.

                           4. Then we mixed it by shaking the jar.

Conclusion: The liquids have three layers. The highest density is maple syrup. Then water. Then the lowest density is the cooking oil.

Team B: Fun Experiment

Group Members: Kim, DoYoon(Collin) Lim, Ellyn(Ellyn) Choi, SeoYoon(Seoyoon) / Kim, DongYoon(Christopher) Kim, JiHyo(Olivia) Joung, YuHyeon(Ian)

Materials: one jar, some colored water, some cooking oil, some maple syrup

Hypothesis: When we pour maple syrup, cooking oil, and colored water, I think it will make bubbles or an explosion.

Method: We poured some colored water, some cooking oil, and some maple syrup into a jar. Then we gave a gentle shake. Then the maple syrup was at the bottom of the jar, the colored water was in the middle, and the cooking oil was on the top.

Conclusion: The highest density was the maple syrup. The middle density was the colored water. The lowest density was the cooking oil. So, our hypothesis was incorrect.

Team C: Experiment

Group Members: Lee, GaHyun(Noella) Lee, SongHyun(Songhyun) Kwak, LeeWan(Riwan) / Lee, HoJin(Hojin) Ryu, IAn(Ian) Kang, SeongHyo(Aaron)

Materials: jar, colored water, maple syrup, oil

Hypothesis: We think this will make bubbles. Oil and water don’t mix, so the oil will float on the water.

Method: We put the water and the syrup together in the jar. The syrup made bubbles. Then we put in the oil. It didn’t mix with the water. It all makes three layers.

Conclusion: When we shake the water, it is separated into three layers. Our hypothesis was wrong.

Team D: Sea Bottle

Group Members: Koo, YeRin(Olivia) Kim, SeoYoon(Zoey) Hahm, JeongWon(Sophia) / Lee, JiWoo(Julie) Kim, TaeYun(Taylor) Cho, SiYun(Son)

Materials: one jar, some colored water, some cooking oil, some maple syrup

Hypothesis:     1. I think it will become like glue

2. I think it will turn black and gas will appear

3. I think it will turn blue

Method:            1. We got one jar, some colored water, some cooking oil, and maple syrup

2. We put all of the liquids into the jar with the order being water, then oil, then maple syrup.

3. We watched the liquids separate. The top was oil, the middle was maple syrup, and the bottom was water.

Conclusion: The lowest density was oil. The middle was maple syrup. The highest was water. It turned blue, so our third hypothesis was the only one that was right.

PEONY

Team A: The Amazing Science Experiment

Group Members: Park, JoonHyung(Louis) Lee, YongJe(Jay) Cha, YoonSol(Tina) / Yoo, SooA(Sophia) Son, JiBeom(Franco) Kim, LiJae(Lijae)

Materials: One glove, vinegar, baking soda, one glass jar

Hypothesis: When the vinegar mixes with the baking soda, it will create a chemical reaction which makes it explode. Then, air will get into the glove, causing it to expand.

Method: We put some vinegar in a jar and then put some baking soda in a glove. The soda went into the vinegar and created a chemical reaction which created CO2 bubbles. The bubbles went into the glove, causing it to expand.

Conclusion: When the vinegar mixed with the baking soda it creates a reaction and carbon dioxide is made. CO2 goes into the glove, which makes it expand and too much of it makes the glove pop off.

Team B: Peony B Team

Group Members: Kim, DaSom(Dasom) Kim, SeungHu(Sun) Song, HaIm(Haim) / Youn, KunWoo(Noah) Kim, JuWon(Julian) Lee, GaBeen(Gabeen)

Materials: One glove, baking soda, vinegar, a bottle or glass jar

Hypothesis: We think when the vinegar touches the baking soda, it will make a chemical reaction and it will explode.

Method: Put baking soda into the tips of the glove and carefully seal the top of the bottle, which has vinegar in it, with the glove. Then, shake the glove to make the baking soda fall into the vinegar. This will make a chemical reaction which makes carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide will try to escape, but the glove blocks its way. So, the glove fills up like a balloon. Too much gas makes it pop out.

Conclusion: The baking soda touched the vinegar and made a chemical reaction. It made carbon dioxide and that gas filled up the glove.

Team C: Peony Group C Science Project

Group Members: Lee, JaeJun(Jaejun) Jeong, DaNu(Daniella) Kim, JiHu(Ryan) / Hong, CaeIn(Jenny) Lee, IAn(Ian) Jeong, IHyn(Hailly)

Materials: baking soda, jar, glove, vinegar

Hypothesis: It will blow up and make a hole in the glove.

Method: First, we got the materials. Second, we put the baking soda in the glove. Third, we put the vinegar in the jar. Fourth, we covered the jar with the glove. Fifth, we mixed the vinegar and baking soda. We watched the glove fill with gas.

Conclusion: The glove popped off because of the carbon dioxide trying to escape but it was trapped by the glove. So, the glove filled up with gas.

Team D: Hi, Glove!

Group Members: Kim, MinJe(Roy) Park, DaeYoon(Daeyoon) Choe, BoNa(Bona) / Choi, JiHwan(Jihwan) Ko, SeoJin(Sophia) Park, JiYou(Jiyou)

Materials: Glass jar, glove, baking soda, vinegar

Hypothesis: When we mix vinegar and baking soda, we think the vinegar will become bubbly and gas will escape and the glove will pop off the jar.

Method: We put vinegar into a glass jar. We put baking soda in a glove and covered the jar with the glove. Then we mix the vinegar and baking soda. This makes carbon dioxide and it tries to escape, but the glove blocks the way. Too much gas makes the glove pop off.

Conclusion: We got a lot of ideas from this experiment. Also, our hypothesis was correct! It was the best day!
